Pepper spray contains oleoresin capsicum (OC) — an inflammatory compound derived from hot peppers. On contact with eyes, nose, and throat, it causes immediate involuntary eye closure, intense burning pain, difficulty breathing, and disorientation.
Effects last 30-45 minutes — enough time to escape and call for help. Pepper spray is non-lethal and legal in all 50 states (some size and concentration restrictions apply).

How long does pepper spray last?
